Vapour Phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VpCI)
Cortec are a global supplier of Vapour Phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VpCI) which come in a broad range of materials including liquids, powders or embedded in packaging that protect metal surfaces from corrosion. The VpCI particles travel through the air as a vapour and form an invisible protective layer on the surface of metals which prevents oxygen, moisture and other corrosive elements from making contact with the metal surfaces. They work best in enclosed spaces where the particles are able to build up, such as the internals of an engine, a void or tank in a ship, a closed tool box or an electronics case or mothballed machinery. As it is a vapour it works well in confined areas that are inaccessible by traditional coating treatments and treats intricate internal components without having to be physically touched or exposed.
The applications for VpCI’s are very broad, common products that Cortec provide include the below:
Oil additives for engines, hydraulic systems and other lubricating oils.
Small emitters used in areas such as electrical switchboards to stop corrosion.
Powders which can be dissolved in water and sprayed onto metal surfaces or fogged with a low-pressure air hose into a cavity or void.
Paper impregnated with VpCI for wrapping metal parts to stop rust or tarnishing whilst stored or in transit.
Heat shrink films which have been used to wrap engines and preserve military machines such as tanks or helicopters.
VpCI impregnated bags for storage of engines, parts or other metal objects which prevent corrosion and tarnishing.
Concrete additives known as Migrating Corrosion Inhibitors (MCI) for preventing and slowing reinforcing bar corrosion.
Additives for coating products that enhance their corrosion protection properties.
Packaging foams which offer padding, VpCI protection, anti-static and dessicant properties all in one lightweight, time saving packaging material.
There are numerous benefits of using VPCI’s to prevent corrosion. There is no removal process needed for the VpCI, no volatile solvents etc are required to remove the inhibitor, when it is in open air the inhibitor will literally float away. The ingredients used in Cortec are generally environmentally friendly, safe to handle and less hazardous than many other nitrite-based inhibitors. Many of the products are water soluble and recyclable.
Cortec has been specified for preservation use on Rolls Royce aircraft engines, by NASA in the Space Shuttle, AIRBUS for shipping parts around the world and Caterpillar engines are wrapped in film during storage and shipping.
